Some people think they have the right to use as much fresh water as they want, while others believe governments should tightly control the use of fresh water as it is a limited resource. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Fresh water is a necessity in human’s daily life but how to use it varies in different societies. Some people take unlimited water consumption for granted, but others think that it is governments’ obligation to control fresh water as it is limited.

It is true that most residents in developed countries and coastal nations do not need to worry about the shortage of fresh water. Sophisticated infrastructures and sufficient precipitation can guarantee sufficient water sup*. The price that these occupants need to pay is water bills and they can use as much water as they want if only they can afford it. Thus, it is undoubted that some of them hold the opinion that they can utilize the resource freely if they want.

While many other people do not need to concern about water consumption, it is also a fact that a large number of inhabitants in many developing countries have no access to clean water because of its scarcity. In those countries, natural environment and climate like droughts have a negative effect on water sup*. What is worse, the poor situation makes water even more precious. If people use as much water as they want in those areas, it can almost be sure that water sup* will fail to meet some people’s daily need. Therefore, it is reasonable that local officials limit the individual water use and people who waste it will be punished.

In my opinion, fresh water should not be used without any restriction. Water sup* depends on heavily on natural environment that it can be regarded as limited resource in some countries. Water conservation, whether it is advocated by government or not, is what people should insist on.

In my opinion, fresh water should not be used without any restriction.

When it comes to the issue about the use of fresh water, some people argue that they are entitled to consume fresh water without limitation, but others believe that the use of fresh water should be controlled by governments strictly.

On one hand, individuals have the right to use fresh water as long as they pay for it. Fresh water is also a kind of commodity. When a person paid money for fresh water, theoretically, this person possesses the property right of fresh water paid and such a property right is guaranteed by laws in most countries. Therefore, if citizens are able to afford the price of fresh water, their right of using water should be protected.

On the other hand, since fresh water is an infinite resource, excessive use of fresh water needs to be prohibited by the authorities. It is acknowledged that fresh water accounts for less than 1% of total water resources on the earth and many regions lack fresh water currently. If governments do not punish people who waste such a precious resource, in the future, fresh water may be exhausted and human beings may not find the alternative so quickly. Thus, in order to maintain the environmental sustai*lity, city councils need to regulate citizens’ behavior.

From my own perspective, it is unrealistic and immoral for individuals to use water excessively, but residents may also suffer if governments strictly limit the use of fresh water. A compromise may be that governments do not utilize political power, but economic measures to raise the public’s environmental awareness. To be more specific, if individuals or enterprises consume too much water, the price of fresh water will be much higher for them, which aims to remind them of the necessity of recycling water. For ordinary citizens, if they just use water within a normal range, there is no need to impose extra fines on them.

From my own perspective, it is unrealistic and immoral for individuals to use water excessively, but residents may also suffer if governments strictly limit the use of fresh water.

Since human beings have existed in the Earth for millions of years, some scientists are curious about other intelligent forms in the universe. Some scientists attempt to communicate with these life forms. However, others believe it would be hazardous. In the following essay, both views will be explored as well as my personal stance.

On one hand, many scientists and evidence has proved that humans are definitely not the only creature in the universe, so contacting these intelligent life forms could be demanding. Specifically, other life forms also existed on other planets; some of them even have visited the Earth. For example, about several decades ago, an UFO has visited a small town of America, and they did not attack the humans. They could have destroyed the Earth if they had despicable plans. Therefore, contacting with these unknown creatures could help us to know the outer space better, so it would be beneficial for the humans to try to contact with these aliens.

In stark contrast, some other scientists believe that contacting with life forms would bring danger to the humans because we barely know them. To be precise, some scientists believe that these intelligent life forms could be smarter than us, and have more advanced technologies, people cannot win the war if they invade the Earth. Take films as example, as it describes in Independence Day, aliens invaded the Earth as they were aiming at the sufficient natural resources on earth and it is totally for their own interest. Their attack caused huge damage to the earth as human beings have no advanced weapon to fight back.

In my opinion, even getting in touch with aliens could bring dangers to humans, it is still worth trying as I believe the majority of them are seeking for peace of the whole universe and hostility is barely carried. Looking for other creatures in the vast universe is a big step for humans to explore the outer space. It could be a double-sword, bringing both opportunities and challenges. Whether aliens are dangerous dose not truly matter under this circumstance, what is more important is that earthman, us, have the ability and courage to take adventures in the unknown space and meet something new.

With advancement of societal technology, certain scientists work for looking for other intelligent life forms who may not exist on the earth such as aliens. While some people argue that contacting with them is likely to bring danger to human. Therefore, the essay aims to critically discuss both views and come up with my own opinion.

That a number of researchers try to find other planets’ living species has to be admitted that pursing that curiosity is one of mankind’s nature. Additionally, by exchanging ideas with aliens about historical progression and academic discussion and so on, mankind’s world has the opportunity to make immense progress in modern technology by giving inspirations to scientists for pushing the frontiers of science which may solve particular thorny issues such as environmental pollution. On the other hand, as far as some researchers are concerned, it lays a solid foundation for people to possess an improved quality of life who live on other planets in order to avoid diseases and disasters brought by serve atmosphere pollution and doomsday respectively.

While, simultaneously, others claim that touching with aliens probably breaks seemingly peaceful earth and brings unexpected danger. Firstly, it is likely that being greedy, exploitative and violent, aliens are searching for somewhere to harvest for water, minerals and fuel, contributing to meeting unprecedented risk by telling them the man’s existence. Furthermore, people know nothing of extraterrestrial intelligence intentions and capabilities so it is impossible to predict whether they will be benign or hostile. For example, earthlings will may be slaughtered and enslaved as colonized countries in the past time.

From a personal perspective, earthlings can try to search for other unique life forms in various planets, but without promising to guarantee human’s lives, it would not better send messages to aliens and disturb their daily lives.

Our imagination about beings on other planets has never stopped and reached its climax in such movie series like “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” in 1960s and 1970s. If other life forms do exist, an idea I strongly support, should we, as human beings on the Earth, try to reach out and communicate with them?

A lot of people do not like the idea of sending messages to aliens “out there”. According to their theory, trying to establish communication with other life forms is extremely expensive because it entails designing complex equipment and apparatus. This will consume tons of money, which should be spent solving more practical problems like medical care or education. More importantly, as these people would claim, once they receive our messages and know about our existence, the aliens may invade the Earth and eliminate us all, just like what they do in many movies and science fiction.

There are others who are very enthusiastic about reaching out for aliens on other planets. They are interested in how these different life forms survive and believe their more advanced technology may well help us human beings solve our existent problems. Having been living in the universe as the only intelligent being for too long, many people find it very attractive to reach their brothers and sisters from other planets. It is significant for another reason, too. As the Earth will surely die and disappear into the black hole as many scientists have speculated, we need to be known by our siblings on other planets so that when that day eventually does come, our future grand, grand children will not perish.

Personally, I do not think much of the “danger” theory. If the aliens are less developed than us, they cannot be a threat to us even if they want to; if they are more developed and civilized, the probability that we are killed by them is still lower. Once the xenophobic danger is removed, I believe most of us will welcome the idea of communicating with the intelligent forms outside the Earth, because they can provide us with the much desired companionship and may save us when the Earth expires.

Some people think getting old is entirely bad, but other people do think it’s much better for old people to live now than in the past. Please show your idea with explanation, examples and your knowledge.

It has become a common phenomenon for people in a number of countries to enjoy an increasing life expectancy. While some people believe it is horrible just to imagine getting old , I think the situation has completely changed comparing to decades ago and now elderly people can lead a happy life.

In some cases, the seniors do experience empty nest syndrome because their children are away from home. However, things are different nowadays. There are numerous residential homes with trained carers in a country and they have become a perfect place for the elderly to stay after retirement, where the elderly will not feel lonely and bored with the company of their peers.

Another concern for numerous senior citizens is the health problem. In the past, without advanced medical science, the seniors tend to suffer from various kinds of diseases, which decrease their quality of life at great extent. By contrast, the medical science is developing at an amazing speed and this trend can at least delay the onset of some chronic conditions and with healthy body, the elderly can enjoy happier lives.

Apart from the two factors discussed above, instead of feeling useless or frustrated, elderly people can work beyond the retirement age or devote themselves to somewhere else to enrich their life. For example, a friend of my grandfather work as a part time doctor in his local community. In this way, not only does he make best use of his time, but also help a number of neighbours.

To sum up, I hold the viewpoint that with the development of society and care from family members, elderly people can enjoy a more satisfying and meaningful life.

Getting old is a natural process that nobody really likes. When you reach a certain age, your physical conditions will inevitably deteriorate, and you may suffer from various kinds of diseases. When you retire, you will feel isolated because your previous work contacts may be all gone, then you may feel useless to the world. Furthermore, when you get too old, you’ll have to rely heavily on the support from others, either physically or emotionally, and your life will become a great pressure to your family and the whole society as well.

For all these bad things about getting old, many people argue that the life of the elderly today is much easier than in the past. In the first place, medical advances nowadays have made it possible for the old people to stay sound and healthy for quite a long while even after they retire. Diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart attack which might have inflicted pain on the old people are no longer serious problems for them. Then, with the widespread use of modern communication technology, old people today are no longer isolated from the world. Instead, by using their personal social media, they can always stay in touch with their families and friends, and share with them whatever they find interesting in their life. In this way, they do not really feel lonely or abandoned. Finally, the improved social wealth and pension system have also significantly reduced the pressure the old people pose to their families and communities.

So, I do agree that the old people today are enjoying a much more comfortable life than, say, thirty years ago (not to mention 100). That is why, instead of being worried about their retired life, many people even begin to expect their retirement to come, because they see this as a new beginning of their life. I think, as long as the old people have the right attitude, the modern world has indeed much to offer for their happy, enjoyable and rewarding retired life.

Some countries achieve international sporting success by building specialized facilities to train top athletes instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Many spectators would be too exhilarated to resist their feelings when they see their national flag rise with the national anthem in Olympic Games. These sports feats can hardly be achieved without some specialized facilities to train the most promising sportsmen. Although patriotism can be aroused by excellent performance, I hold the view that more sports facilities should be built to cater for the need of the public.

On latent problem for the intended construction of specialized facilities exclusively for sportsmen is that it may dampen public’s enthusiasm for sports. Being discouraged from using the sports facilities, they are likely to believe that the access to sports is only a priority to a small proportion of top athletes. Whether these facilities can be utilized is based on how much contribution to the country instead of the basic principle that each individual has the right to shape their bodies by some sports facilities.

Another problem that will arise is that the potential talent pool of gifted athletes will be drained and lose its continuous sup*. Most top sportsmen are not born to the stars, and their aptitude of sports occurs when they are jogging on the playground, playing tennis in the tennis court and running on the football pitch. Without the sports facilities accessible to the common people, their sports talent is unlikely to be found and then fully harnessed.

There are certainly some benefits of the specialized facilities construction. The top sportsmen can be professionally trained without much disturb of the public, thereby concentrating on their physical practice. They can also make full of these facilities to boost their body and improve their professionalism. However, the beneficiaries are narrowly constrained with a small proportion of people and the sports resources are somewhat wasted.

In conclusion, the benefit of sports facilities should be enjoyed by more individuals rather than only meet the need of the sports elites.

Some countries today invest huge amount of money on specialized facilities for the training of their top athletes to achieve sporting success internationally. I think this investment is rewarding as long as it is not at the expenses of the sports facilities for the public.

The benefits of athletes winning on international sports arena such as Olympic Games or the World Cup Championship are multiple. For the athletes, who often come from economically underprivileged families, a champion can save them from their financial embarrassment, not just for themselves, but for the entire families as well. An Olympic champion, furthermore, can become a national hero and serve as the role model for numerous young people, who will try to be as hard-working, self-disciplined, and persistent as the champion. Most importantly, a hard-won champion title can even bring pride to the entire nation and help the nation to move on, especially in hard times.

However, more international champions should not become the excuse to cut down on the investment on the public sports facilities. A country without adequate sports facilities for the general public can never be truly encouraged no matter how many world champions it boasts. You will understand the frustration when you put on your sports shirt and go out, spurred by the perfect performance of an athlete you love in an important game, only to find that all available gyms and stadiums are crowded, leaving you nowhere to go.

To conclude, international sporting success is necessary, which explains why a country ought to put money into specialized facilities to train its top athletes. However, if the government has to make a choice between the world champions and the public sports facilities, I will support the second one. To my mind, only when the general mass of people enjoy the adequate sports facilities will they be encouraged and motivated by their world champions.

  (2)手机和电脑交流时不用注意对方的手势和表情,导致我们对声调、表情等非语言因素阅读能力的下降;

Now you are benefiting from the use of mobile phone and the Internet as social interaction media, could you imagine what your daily lives would be without these inventions? Some people claim that individuals are gradually losing face-to-face communication skills. Nevertheless, from personal perspective, online communication cannot make people lose the ability of offline communication.

Apparently, excessive use of the Internet and mobile phones has been undermining our interpersonal relationship offline. Even during a face-to-face conversation, it is no rare thing that everyone is busy looking at his cell phones, neglecting his friends or families across the dinner table. In addition, it has become incredibly easy to contact each other electronically and share information instantly in social community. Gone are the days when people could only communicate via fixed telephone or writing letters which took several days to reach others. So no one is not crazy about smart phones and com*rs which boast cutting-edge functions like sharing photos and videos with more friends simultaneously.

In spite of the popularity of technological progress mentioned above, never should we turn a blind eye to the irreplaceablity of face-to-face communication. It is common that many schools impart knowledge to students by teaching in classrooms instead of distance education. The same is true of the cooperation among companies, which needs face to face conversation to acquire trust with each other in advance. Furthermore, although online contact may possess increasing numbers of friends, the permanence of mutual relationships cannot lack face-to-face interactions, which can be confirmed by the example of the closest friends and even loving couples. Besides, solving tricky issues are generally more effective and more convenient by surrounding colleagues or friends then by those who live and work in remote places and need online communication.

As far as social interaction is concerned, although the cell phone and the Internet have updated the lives of the current generation. People cannot forget how to make offline communication with each other.

We live in a world where communication through modern technology such as smart phone and com*r is so prevalent that it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing someone texting, emailing, writing blogs and tweeting. Of course the use of technology can be good. It provides us with faster, more efficient ways to communicate with others, but it can also harm our ability to communicate with people face to face.

Studies have shown that students who rely so heavily on technology have trouble communicating in person because they don’t quite develop all of the necessary skills to hold or even start a face-to-face conversation. For example, students who are constantly texting with abbreviated forms of words such as “LOL” and “OMG” have begun to speak with the same acronyms. This form of talking is often seen as flighty and uneducated. Furthermore, in the face to face communication, especially the serious ones, such as interviewing someone, or just meeting someone for the first time, we need to catch the subtle tone in their voice, see their expression as it changes from sad to outraged, and look them in the eye to see if they are trustworthy. Yet most of these skills have been lost to our obsession to the smart phone and com*r.

In addition, many of us have formed the habit of using the smart phone even when they are with their friends. The unspoken subtext of checking text messages in front of friends is: “Somewhere else there is someone who I care about more than you. I want to know what they have to say more than what you have to say to me now.” In this way, we are devaluing our current situation, the friends and family around us, our surroundings and setting, for something going on elsewhere. This is certainly a complete disrespect for the people we spend time with in person, which may ruin our relationship with them.

In summary, though I believe the smart phone and com*r are very useful in speeding up our communication with others, they may prevent us from finding enough time to communicate with real people in person and even worse, they may result in ineffectiveness or even failure in our face-to-face interactions with others.

Many parts of the world are losing important natural resources, such as forests, animals, or clean water.

Choose one resource that is disappearing and explain why it needs to be saved.

  Model Answer:

As human"s population is dramatically rising every year, people"s requirements are increasing too. We need more food, more fresh water, more places to live. As a result of this many parts of the world are losing essential and sometimes irreplaceable resources, such as forest, animals, or fresh water. In this essay I will focus on the threat of disappearing many wild animals.

The reason why I think that animals should be preserved is that all living creatures on this planet are connected with each other. So, the disappearance of only one species can cause dramatic changes in the planet and even death of many other living creatures. For example, the disappearance of bats will cause the huge increasing of insect population and this will reflect on all animals and plants. Another example is that if the population of bats increases, the population of insects will decrease significantly, and this will cause the disappearance of many plants because insects are the main pollinators. So, I think it is very important to preserve all species on our planet and live in harmony with our environment.

Another important reason why I think that animals should be saved is that I, personally, do not want my child to learn about different animals from books and not be able to see them alive. I think it is shameful for humankind to explain our children that we are the reason why those animals disappeared.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the issue about losing important natural resources is topical and open for debate nowadays. I believe that together people can make a difference. From my point of view, the first problem we should find a solution for is human"s overpopulation. As I mentioned above people"s demands are growing and this means we consume more and more natural resources. The second question, which is on the list of most important issues, is pollution including the air pollution, water pollution, etc.

In some countries, advertisers increase the amount of advertising which try to persuade children to buy snacks, toys, and other goods. Parents object to such pressure on children. But some advertisers claim that there is useful information in these advertisements. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

When it comes to the issue about how to judge advertisements aimed at children, some people argue that such pressure should be away from children, but others believe that those advertisements could bring benefits to children.

On one hand, excessively purchasing items for children may lead to economic burden of families. It is acknowledged that children may be easily influenced by adverts with vivid images and content. When children demand objects promoted by advertisements and smoothly obtain them from their parents, they may continue to ask for more fresh and interesting goods recommended by TV programs. Then, parents have to spend a lot of money on toys at the expense of reducing the life quality of the who family.

On the other hand, children could also acquire some merits from advertisements. There are some toys, such as LEGO products, that could really improve children’s practical skills and creativity. For LEGO manufacturers, they need to produce some advertisements to promote their toys on television or other channels. Without those advertisements, neither could producers make a living nor could parents and children enjoy those toys, which reflects the importance of adverts.

From my own perspective, introducing some toys is necessary for children because children also need some recreation, but governments should better regulate the content of advertisements for children. To be more specific, some inappropriate content, such as violence and drugs, should be strictly forbidden in adverts for children. Also, parents need to communicate with children in terms of what they could afford and what they may not afford, helping children form a correct attitude towards consumption.

People today are too often bombarded with various advertisements on television,in newspapers or on the running buses or subways, a large proportion of which are children targeted.

Some people may point out that too much exposure to advertising imposes too much stress on children as well as their parents. The advertisers usually have a deep insight into children"s psychology and behaviors which are taken into advantage of in their advertising to make their products. whether a toy, a snack or some other goods, more appealing to the young minds. As a result, the innocent young are very likely to fall prey to the predators and ask them parents to buy whatever is advertised, regardless of the price and the function.

However, advertisers themselves hardly agree with these arguments, claming that the advertisements a re full of useful information. This is true to a certain extent. In some cases, parents tend to choose the right quality products according to what a commercial introduces, especially after careful comparison.

Nevertheless, in some others, quite the revers e is true. That is to say that the information in a commercial is far from helpful but rather harmful because almost kinds of advertising will definitely exaggerate their merits but conceal their demerits.

Overall, I believe that advertising marketed towards children should be strictly examined and controlled by the related authorities because children are the disadvantaged group of people and prone to any tricks and deceits. Also parents should be more discreet when choosing a product from advertisements.

Technology is not always an angel, rather, in some cases, it may turn out to be a devil making our life rather miserable and complicated. Indeed, besides having to take trouble to learn to use the technology, who has not at least once cursed the technology when he flips open his computer for some important data only to find that the computer breaks down or when he is eager to fly to a city for a life-and-death business negotiation only to be told that his flight is canceled?

Yet, it does not follow that we can make our life simpler by getting rid of technology. On the contrary, technology can make our life a great deal easier and more comfortable. In the old days when email was not available, we probably had to travel a couple of miles to the post office in order to send a “hello” letter to our friends, but now it is just a matter of a few simple clicks on the computer / cellphone keyboard. Today, we have to climb several hundred feet to the top of a building to do the construction work, yet when robots are developed in future, this job can be performed by them safely and quickly.

So whether technology is a nuisance or a help depends upon your attitude towards life. If you enjoy a simple life of a hermit like Thoreau, you’d better stay away from any technology, for it will complicate or even ruin your lifestyle, but if your ambition is to become a successful businessman or politician, you must keep abreast of the latest development of technology, for it will surely help you realize your dream.

When it comes to the issue about the impact of technology, some people argue that it is better to promote simple life styles without technology, but I approve of the idea that our life becomes more convenient thanks to technology.

To begin with, the way of communication is simpler due to technological improvements. In the past, it was inconvenient for individuals to contact others if they were far from each other and letter writing might be the only method of long distance communication. However, telecommunications in the current era allow people to communicate with anyone through telephones or internet. Thus, technologies actually facilitate communications, connecting people to each other.

In addition, technology reduces labor intensity greatly. Decades ago, it was common that workers needed to do a lot of labor-intensive work repeatedly and housewives needed to spend several hours on domestic affairs. In contrast, automatic assembly line serves to liberate workers from such hard work and modern appliances could shorten the time of doing housework every day. As a result, modern life becomes simpler since individuals can avoid meaningless work and spare more time on other parts of life.

Admittedly, some opponents may believe that their work has become more complex due to modern technology because they need to adopt some new systems, such as those Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, which waste extra time and are not friendly to users, especially old users. However, they are neglecting the potential benefits and convenience brought by modern technology. The fact is that enterprises could better manage their resources with the use of ERP systems, which contributes to regulating enterprises more scientifically. Besides, enterprises will also provide their employees with guideline for new systems, and many employees refuse to use new systems just because they are too lazy to change themselves, which cannot be a reasonable excuse for denying technologies.

To sum up, life is not complex with technology and human beings should embrace technology, considering that technology offers humans convenient ways of communication and reduces labor intensity.

Gone are the days when people’s choice for TV programs was extremely limited. But the phenomenon of accessing to a growing number of TV channels arouses various argues for citizens. Before rendering my position, I aim to critically discuss both views and come up with my own opinion.

Those who support more TV channels are mainly due to the fact that they make it easier for individuals to choose different TV programs according to personal tastes with diverse interests. For instance, some young people tend to enjoy entertainment or exciting programs while the elderly are more interested in news channels. Furthermore, an easy access to various kinds of programs gives great convenience for individuals to meet their mentally developmental needs. Specifically, some children may watch educative programs to broaden their horizons while certain adults are likely to watch series in order to enrich their leisure time.

Nevertheless, some people claim that more programs cannot guarantee their quality. First and foremost, there is no distinct line between high-quality and low-quality programs, resulting in the production of TV programs with poor quality compared with excellent similar programs. On the other hand, the professional quality of program producers is not capable of keeping up with the number of TV programs. It is inevitable that a number of channels are poor apologies. Even worse, it is difficult to control the process of talent shows which may include unexpected scenes, contributing to exerting an undesirable effect on people’s, especially on youngster’s psychological development.

As far as I am concerned, although increasing TV channels have shortcomings, such as negatively influence individuals’ mental development because of unhealthy programs on TV, they are in a position to give enormous satisfaction to residents who have various needs as long as certain poor-quality programs are restricted by authorities concerned.
