 陆鑫慧 Synopsis :

The novel is around the friendship between Mariam and Laila. It is split into four parts, with a focus on Mariam in the first part, continuing with Laila in the second, the relationship between the two women in the third part and Laila"s life with Tariq in part four, which is also the only part written in the present tense. Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years than her age. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam"s unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter.

With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life is a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women"s endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction.

This time Khaled Hosseini will focus on Afghan women, the story of two Afghan women who suffer from hunger and pain. Families must endure the trauma of war and the displacement of refugees. The country had to endure the Soviet Union, the taliban and the American war. This is a history of patience in Afghanistan. The plot is cleverly designed, symbolized and conscious, with the exception of the usual prosecution of war and the cry for women"s rights

  Comment:

 A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS,

the second novel written by American writer Khaled Hosseini, gets a lot of attention before being published. It started in the United States on May 22, 2007, and it sold breakthrough 1 million copies in only a week, won critical acclaim, acclaimed by many reviewers as "the greatest work of the man who overtook the kite runner". The author, who has continued his writing conventions, always give a little bit of good hope again and again after relentless break, makes me deep in the hero sad maelstrom, unable to extricate themselves. And his novel really let me deeply touched is not its sad but at the end of the good, after all sad because only people who have been to hell can really realize the beauty of heaven, because it is too hard. Due to the background of birth and the difference of growing environment, there are inevitable differences between the two main female characters, Mariam and Laila. Marianne was born in a "poor", for the wealthy and the maid’s unlawful

daughter, expelled outside the shack for many years. She was disdain and disdain by the mainstream society, the rich merchant family, including her own mother, Nana, and even Marianne himself had made a negative judgment on herself. In the novel, most of the judgments about Marianne involve social dignity and are essentially negative and direct. In Nana’s eyes, Mariam is a clumsy little harami, an heirloom-breaking, clumsy little harami, unwanted thing, an illegitimate person. The reason why her mother made such a negative judgment is that her own misery. Nana had a happy marriage, but because of her intermittent neuropathy, she scared off her bridegroom when she was getting married. And after becoming the maid of a rich merchant, she was insulted and turned out into a laughing stock, and even her father could not bear the gossip of others and left her. The image of Mariam in Laila"s eyes is: drooping cheeks, the eyelids that sagged in tired folds, the deep lines that framed her mouth, a five of grievances unspoken, burdens Bane un-protected, a destiny submitted to and endured. Mariam jokingly called herself an old, ugly hag, a fool. Thus, this miserable figure is fleshed out, make the reader deeply touched. Throughout the book, Laila, another of the main female characters in the novel, is not much of a judgmental word. However, in stark contrast to what happened to Marian, the few judgmental words were generally positive. Unlike Mariam’s mother, Lena"s mother made a positive judgment on her daughter: a girl as pretty as you. Of course, this is inseparable from the education and free thought of Laila"s mother. Although Laila made negative judgments about Mariam, Mariam"s comments on Lena were positive and positive:

lucky, blond curls, her slender neck and green eyes, her high cheekbones and plump lips. The sun fell on the girl’s face s five, on her large green eyes and her smooth brow, her high cheekbone and the appealing, thick eyebrow.

Two different kinds of judging words also seem to herald a different way of life for Mariam and Laila. After killing her huaband, Mariam went alone to face the sin and went to the execution ground. She sent Laila away with the child and Tariq to pursue a happy life, and her action indicated the capital word "human".

To the consolation, Laila finally realized Mariam"s expectations and dreams. In Chapter 48 of the novel, the narrative writes:

" Laila is happy here in Murree".

In my opinion, Leila was very kind. She regarded Mariam as a sister, and knew that Mariam was a victim as well as herself. In her relationship with Lila, Mariam"s desolate emotional world sowed the seeds of love and hope. She became calm, happy and satisfied, "all that I longed for when I was young had already been given to me because of you. “You and your two children have made me feel so happy." It spawned Mariam"s betrayal and was willing to give up her life and save Leila. In Rasheed"s brutal assault, Mariam woke up, "this is the first time she has decided on her own life."

Mariam completed the self-construction and found the meaning of life and the return of subjective consciousness. In her execution, Mariam thought it was her last order to listen to others, which meant that women had a free will at the

expense of death. At the same time, Mariam"s love for herself made Leila overcome her weakness in character, bravely start a new life and return to Afghanistan with her love for Mariam. And as a teacher, she inspired the minds of people in Afghanistan. From this, Laila also found its own existence value, gradually grows, acquiring the new life and the redemption.

  Conclusion:

Afghanistan is a country I knew little. There are tragedies in A Thousand Splendid Suns – heart-breaking tragedy – yet the story is ultimately an inspirational epic with the power to enlighten us spiritually as well as historically.

When I read this novel, I was moved by the sad fact that the novel has been many a poor Afghan woman’s reality. This eye-opening read has the power to change my view of the world and my place in it, and that makes it a truly masterful piece of literature.

The author gives me a totally different feeling, let me rediscover Afghanistan and understand the suffering experienced by the Afghan people, although it may be part of suffering.

What author showed to me was that the glory of the human nature, people buried on the seeds of hope from the bottom of their heart, no matter how difficult the situation is, the seed will never die. One day, hope will be a bud of pale green, redeem every pious man. I can"t understand the suffering of Afghan women completely. I can"t understand the profound disaster of their life. However, their participation in this situation shocked me. But, by them, I am more grateful and cherish the life I have now, I have freedom and rights. I was born and lived in a peaceful time, a peaceful country.

I like to read my character in the self-salvation of perseverance between the lines, they have their beliefs, maybe I can"t understand such beliefs how important is it for them, but the belief is that they can’t lack of things in the body, like the brain, like blood. But I am deeply saddened by the fact that religion is often used as a cover for some people to commit atrocities, but faith itself is a wonderful thing. This is the odd feeling in my first reading of the book. I believe it can bring me far more than that. The author of the novel is full of humanistic solicitude for women. It puts the oppressed Afghan women in the historical background, taking the fate of the small as a link, reflecting the tragedy, growth and redemption of the women in the era of torrent. From the patient to revolt, from the exclusion of homosexuality to the establishment of intimate relationships with the same sex, in this process, a series of traumatic events prompted her to start questioning and rebellion against the patriarchal society, care for women suffering, to seek the road of hope, growth and self-improvement, expressing a positive salvation don"t break her.

In the process of women"s growth, they must question the process of males. In this

process, women are inevitably traumatized by their body and mind, and at the same time they have gained new life. Mariam redeemed Lila"s love and life at the cost of her life, but also her spiritual salvation and the sublimation of life, and completed her own growth. A Thousand Splendid Suns is Khaled Hosseini"s second novel. This novel tells a heartrending story against the backdrop of Afghanistan warfare. This thesis interprets A Thousand Splendid Suns from the perspective of Postmodern Feminism. It aims to criticize the social system and social ideology of Afghanistan which are on behalf of male will.

This thesis is divided into five parts: The introduction part briefly introduces Khaled Hosseini, the main content of A Thousand Splendid Suns and this novel"s current research status, basic theories of Postmodern Feminism and the structure of this thesis. Chapter one mainly describes Mariam"s initial state of silence. But after a long struggle with Male discourse hegemony, she finally gives out her voice. Based on those, her own discourse system is formed. At last, Mariam gets rid of Male discourse hegemony.

As knowledge symbolizes power and Mariam is lack of knowledge, Mariam likes Jalil and Fassou L...
